A Message from Gail

Hello Friends,

At Kansas Children’s Service League (KCSL), we believe every child deserves a safe, loving environment. Preventing child abuse isn’t just the responsibility of professionals or parents, it’s something everyone can take part in. There are simple ways for us to make a difference every day, and I encourage you to find one that best fits you and your lifestyle. Whether you’re an educator, a business professional, a neighbor or a parent, your actions have the power to change lives.

Celebrate Child Abuse Prevention Month

Child Abuse Prevention Month (CAP Month) provides opportunities to take action and raise awareness throughout April. Participate in Wear Blue Day on April 4 and post a photo on social media to show your support for children and families. On Digital Advocacy Day on April 9, you can make a difference by contacting your local legislators to advocate for increased investments in prevention. Another simple yet powerful way to spread awareness is by sharing prevention posts from KCSL’s Facebook and Instagram pages with your family and friends. While we emphasize prevention in April, this important work continues all year long.

Five Ways to Strengthen Families, Prevent Harm

Preventing child abuse and neglect starts with strengthening families. To achieve this, prioritize building the five protective factors, which empower families to thrive even in challenging times. These factors act as safeguards equipping parents with the resources, support and skills needed to navigate stress and raise healthy, resilient children. Research shows that when these protective factors are present, the risk of abuse and neglect decreases.

You can practice prevention within your own family by focusing on these five areas:

  • Parental Resilience – The ability to cope with stress, adapt to difficulties and recover from setbacks helps parents provide a stable and nurturing environment for their children.
  • Social Connections – A supportive network of family, friends and community members provides encouragement and practical help when needed.
  • Knowledge of Parenting and Child Development – Understanding how children grow and what they need at each stage helps parents set realistic expectations and respond effectively.
  • Concrete Support in Times of Need – Access to essential services, such as food, housing or medical care, ensures families can meet their basic needs during difficult times.
  • Social and Emotional Competence of Children – Helping children develop strong social skills and emotional regulation allows them to express their feelings in healthy ways.

By strengthening these protective factors, families become more resilient, better supported and more equipped to handle stress. This creates a safer, healthier environment where children grow and thrive.

Support Prevention through Action

You can play a key role in preventing child abuse and neglect by getting involved with KCSL. Volunteering is a powerful way to support prevention efforts and help us build stronger families. We’re always looking for individuals and groups to assist with community and family events. We offer both short-term and ongoing opportunities including youth volunteer projects for 14-18-year-olds. Volunteer roles include supporting 1-800-CHILDREN phone services, helping at family gatherings, assisting with fundraisers and providing office support. As a KCSL volunteer, you’ll help promote our mission and extend our reach to those in need. Whether statewide or within specific communities, we have numerous volunteer opportunities that make a difference.

Another way to support prevention efforts year-round is by giving to KCSL. Your donation directly supports our work helping to provide the essential services children and parents need to overcome life’s challenges. To find the most common ways to help KCSL, visit our Ways to Give page.

The Power of Prevention

Whether you choose to participate in CAP Month, strengthen the five protective factors in your family, volunteer or donate, your efforts contribute to stronger, happier families and a brighter future for children. We are creating opportunities for families to thrive by prioritizing child abuse prevention. With hope as our guide and prevention as our strength, we can build a world where every family has the resources and support they need to succeed.

Thank you for being a part of prevention,
