In 2021, Debora Clark first came across Kansas Children’s Service League (KCSL) when she enrolled in our early childhood home visitation services. Today, she uses her experience to help other families find the same encouragement, connection and resources that helped her move forward. Her journey reflects the power of family support programs that not only help parents through difficult times but also encourage them to become leaders.
Turning support into service
Debora’s passion for helping others began early, starting with friendships and volunteer opportunities during her school years. Before becoming disabled in 2017, Debora worked as a targeted case manager and spent years supporting people with developmental disabilities. After having her second son, Maverick, Debora was referred to KCSL.
“I was facing life-changing challenges,” Debora said. “I felt overwhelmed and needed emotional and environmental support.”
Now, Debora serves on KCSL’s Parent Advisory Council (PAC), a group that invites parents to share their perspectives, shape programs and support other families in their communities. Debora joined the PAC in March of 2025 while still enrolled in KCSL services. She has since graduated from the program and hopes to make a positive impact on other families facing difficult circumstances.
Empowering parents to lead
KCSL believes that when parents are empowered, they can become some of the most effective champions for families. Parent leaders like Debora help ensure programs remain responsive to the real needs of children and caregivers.
“I personally know how helpful it is to receive support and want to give others the same feeling of being cared for and seen,” she said.
That perspective brings valuable insight to the PAC. By sharing her experiences and participating in volunteer efforts, Debora helps KCSL better serve parents, children and communities across Kansas. Through these leadership opportunities, families gain a voice in shaping the programs that support them.
Finding purpose through volunteerism
Volunteering has impacted Debora’s own life in a meaningful way. Since becoming disabled, she has found some opportunities to help others more difficult to access.
“KCSL has given me the opportunity to serve others while allowing accommodations for my disabilities,” Debora said.
She feels volunteering gives her a sense of purpose and fulfillment. It also strengthens her connection to the broader community through meeting new people, supporting local families and contributing to causes that she cares about. That sense of connection is something KCSL strives to foster through all our services. When parents build relationships and engage in their communities, children benefit from stronger support networks and healthier environments.
As organizations like KCSL work to stretch resources and serve growing numbers of families, volunteers help expand the impact of programs that support child well-being, family stability and community health. Debora’s story is a powerful reminder that volunteers from all walks of life can be helpful in advancing KCSL’s mission. The investment volunteers like Debora put into families creates a ripple effect that extends far beyond a single household. By sharing her voice, volunteering her time and encouraging other parents, Debora is helping KCSL build stronger, happier families.
