Kansas Children’s Service League (KCSL) welcomes Lara Blake Bors as the new chair of our Board of Directors. An attorney and former school board president, Lara has advocated for children and families throughout her career. She brings more than 20 years of experience in education, child welfare and community service. After serving more than a decade on the Garden City Board of Education, she sought new ways to support children and families in her community.
“I still felt the need to continue serving Garden City and ensuring that the kids of Finney County had the best education possible,” Lara said.
That commitment made volunteering with KCSL a natural fit. Through her work as an attorney, Lara has seen firsthand the value of early intervention and family support services. She was already familiar with KCSL’s local impact through our early childhood education programs and recognized our work helping children and families build stronger futures.
Through her private practice, Lara advocates for children and families through adoption, custody, juvenile and family law cases. Lara’s record of service extends well beyond her legal practice. She currently serves on multiple juvenile justice committees and has held leadership roles with numerous community organizations. Her experience working across education, child welfare and the justice system gives her a unique perspective for KCSL.
As Board Chair, Lara is eager to help advance strategic planning goals for KCSL. She sees tremendous opportunity in the collective expertise and passion of board members, staff and supporters.
“Our board has a lot of great people with a lot of great ideas,” Lara said. “I’m very excited to help harness that talent and see how KCSL can move forward.”

Lara’s passion for children started at home. Alongside her husband, Carl, she raised two sons in Garden City. Over the years, she has cheered from the sidelines of their activities and accomplishments. Both sons currently study nuclear engineering at Kansas State University, a path Lara says surprises her since she is “not a math person.”
Now empty nesters, Lara and Carl enjoy traveling, visiting their cabin and spending time with their sons in Manhattan. Throughout her life, Lara has focused on helping others succeed. She has supported her children, served on community boards and advocated for families through her legal work.
Lara believes community involvement is one of the most meaningful ways people can create lasting change.
“Investing in kids is investing in our future,” she said. “KCSL has been doing this work for more than 130 years. You want to invest in the people who know how to put the right pieces of the puzzle together, and that’s what we do at KCSL.”
Lara looks forward to working alongside KCSL board members, staff, volunteers and donors to advance our mission and help Kansas grow stronger, happier families.
