Since 1993, KCSL’s Parent Helpline 1-800-CHILDREN has provided support to Kansas families and professionals. Helpline advocates can discuss various parenting situations or concerns, will listen and talk parents through moments of stress and can help connect callers to local resources including mental health services, parent education and support, quality childcare and early childhood programs. Advocates use a Strengthening Families approach to help families deal with stress and diminish factors that could place them at risk for abuse and neglect providing their children a safe and nurturing environment. To do this, advocates help families increase the following protective factors:
  • Nurturing and Attachment | Building a close bond helps parents better understand, respond to and communicate with their children.
  • Knowledge of Child/Youth Development | Parents learn what to look for at each age and how to help their children reach their full potential.
  • Parental Resilience | Recognizing the signs of stress and enhancing problem-solving skills can help parents build their capacity to cope.
  • Social Connections | Parents with an extensive network of family, friends and neighbors have better support in times of need.
  • Concrete Supports for Parents | Caregivers with access to financial, housing and other concrete resources that help them meet their basic needs can better attend to their role as parents.
The Helpline also encourages the prevention of child abuse within communities. Find out how you can get involved!
