5 Affordable Ways to Enjoy Summer as a Family

Summer offers opportunities for families to slow down, connect and strengthen relationships. Meaningful family time does not have to come at a high price. There are plenty of free or low-cost ways to make lasting memories while supporting your child’s well-being during the summer break.

1) Explore Parks, Nature Trails and Lakes

Kansas is home to many parks, walking trails and natural spaces that are free to access. Additionally, Kansas State Parks often have low entry fees, and some offer free days or affordable annual passes. There are several creative ways to spend time outdoors: pack a picnic, go for a hike, fish or swim at a lake, play at a local playground or splash pad. You can event turn a simple walk into a learning adventure by identifying plants, birds or insects.

Outdoor safety tips to remember:

  • Always supervise children near water and use life jackets when boating or swimming
  • Drink plenty of water and take breaks in the shade
  • Apply sunscreen and bug spray
  • Stay on marked trails and check weather conditions before heading out

2) Visit Museums and Zoos

Many museums and zoos offer discounted admission days or free hours. Some also participate in programs like Museums for All that provide reduced-cost access for families receiving SNAP or WIC assistance. Starting July 9, Kansas students and their families can participate in the Sunflower Summer Program, which provides free admission to different attractions across the state. Many local libraries also offer free family passes you can borrow.

3) Take Advantage of Public Libraries

Speaking of libraries, did you know they offer much more than books? And it’s all FREE. Most public libraries host summer programs including reading challenges, story time sessions and craft activities. Check your local library’s event calendar to find weekly or daily opportunities. Libraries have other items and services you can enjoy like DVDs and Blu-rays, comic books, streaming services, passes to local attractions like museums (see #2), tablets and laptops, activity kits and more.

4) Attend Community Events

Towns across Kansas host free summer events like outdoor concerts, movie nights in the park and festivals. These events are great opportunities for families to engage with their community and experience new activities at little to no cost. Check your local city and county websites or local social media groups for lists of events. Safety tip: Remind children to stay close to caregivers in crowded areas and establish a meeting spot in case anyone gets separated.

5) Find Fun in Your Backyard

You don’t need to go far from home to create meaningful experiences. Simple activities like backyard picnics, water play with sprinklers or hosting a neighborhood game day can be just as memorable as expensive outings. Try organizing water balloon games, chalk art contests or evening stargazing.

Rainy Day? Get Creative Indoors!

Weather in Kansas can be unpredictable. Rainy days are a great opportunity to slow down and connect indoors without spending money. Make homemade cards for loved ones, have a family movie night, play board games, complete a puzzle, cook together or spend time playing with your child through pretend play or with favorite toys.

Most Importantly…

Creating positive family memories does not require a large budget. What matters most is being present, engaged and intentional with your time. By taking advantage of free and low-cost activities, families can build strong connections and support their children’s development. At KCSL, we believe every child deserves a safe, supportive environment filled with opportunities to grow, play and thrive. This summer, focus on connection over cost and watch your family flourish.
