For Brad Heyen, supporting Kansas Children’s Service League (KCSL) is personal. Adopted through KCSL in 1965, Brad has never forgotten the role the organization played in providing him a loving, stable start. Today, Brad gives back through volunteering and monthly giving, making a consistent, meaningful difference for children and families across Kansas.
Brad has been involved with KCSL for nearly two decades, serving on the Board of Directors and the KCSL Foundation Trustees. As a banker looking for a nonprofit to support, he found a natural fit in KCSL’s mission. He became a monthly donor because it was simple and impactful. His regular support provides a steady, predictable source of funding that allows KCSL to plan and respond quickly to the needs of families.
“My first donation came as soon as I became a volunteer,” Brad said. “It’s important to me to give both my time and funds to further the mission.”
Brad’s connection to KCSL began long before he could understand its significance. He grew up knowing he was adopted and always felt supported and loved by his parents, Stan and Nell. His mom made scrapbooks and read to him. His dad coached his sports teams.
In his teenage years, Brad became curious about his birth family. His parents supported his journey and even helped him schedule a meeting at the same KCSL office where he was adopted. That experience sparked a lifelong appreciation for KCSL’s work. Years later, as a young husband and soon-to-be father, Brad decided to search for his birth mother. Within an hour of opening the phone book, he was on the phone with her.
“It’s personal when I hear the stories of what some kids and families have to overcome,” he said. “I was blessed with an amazing family and a picture-perfect childhood. Life isn’t always fair. I just want to help some.”
Now, Brad’s story has come full circle. He walks into the same KCSL building that helped shape his life—this time as a leader and supporter. He hopes his story encourages others to give what they can.
“There are endless ways to give of your resources,” Brad said. “But I know of no other place that impacts kids the way KCSL does. Help a kid. Help a family. Change a life. Change the next generation for someone.”
